and with:
In a circular approach, the focus shifts to preserving multiple values and restoring them through tactical actions like reuse, refurbishing, and remanufacturing furniture and interior elements, for example, through modular systems that can be adapted for various applications in offices, retail, or homes. Furthermore , biobased furniture adds value to social, relational, and human values . This minimizes depletion and waste, strengthens ecosystem resilience, and generates multiple values for people, the environment, and the economy, in line with services such as co-creative design, implementation, and maintenance at Lifecycle Interiors, moving beyond mere compliance to sustainable relationships and philosophical frameworks like stakeholder theory.

Marco Heezen, owner of Bioplasticshop, works with Fibernyl; a bioplastic made from, among other things,
Elephant grass. This is partly why the panels are biobased and biodegradable. This means they are made from organic products and are biodegradable. Elephant grass captures four times more CO2 than trees and requires no irrigation, fertilizers, or pesticides. This makes it a highly sustainable crop that is also grown in the Netherlands. Atelier Fig. - Gijs Wouters and Ruben Hoogvliet's work responds to the demand for new and personalized products within the current industry. Frame Cabinet is crafted from beautiful beech wood. Each component is precision-machined into 2.5 x 2.5 cm beams.
A 'FIRST' IN THE CONTEXT OF BIOBASED CONSTRUCTION:
For SUPERBio's participation in DDW '25, Fig is creating the hanging section from a material that fits within the context of biobased construction. They are collaborating with Belgian designer and glassblower Jeffe of Studio Franche, whose expertise lies in using recycled materials from industrial environments. The capsule will be made of reinforced glass salvaged from old factory buildings. READ MORE

BC Materials produces and sells circular clay building materials based on excavated earth.
BC Materials' ambition is to replace standard building materials with clay building materials to encourage the use of available urban mineral waste streams (such as excavated earth). Clay plasters, clay bricks, and rammed earth can be used to build healthy and circular buildings. READ MORE

Tom Schoonhoven, owner of Tom Schoonhoven Studio, likes to closely connect his product designs with project ideas and to make extensive connections.
Who is Tom Schoonhoven Studio?
A studio that values all the things around us.
Tom Schoonhoven Studio's respectful production methods demonstrate how knowledge and skills of tools and crafts can transform unparalleled product design into a project's identity and create unique environments.
What does Tom Schoonhoven's collection consist of?
After graduating from the Design Academy Eindhoven,
Tom was given the opportunity to create an object for the Design Museum Ghent. This resulted in the Tube Lamp, made from a material made from crushed construction waste from the city of Ghent, developed in collaboration with BC Materials for the museum's new building.
This new building will be completed in 2026.
The tube lamp is made from compacted local earth. But Tom Schoonhoven Studio is just as skilled at crafting products from reclaimed or FSC-certified wood and other recycled natural materials.
Like the utility table . It originated from an interest in chopping blocks. What stands out most about this studio's design qualities is the added value it offers.
And that is in the way of designing, that extra touch of skill, the characterful materials used and originality.
What drives you most to produce biobased or nature-based?
What drives me to produce biobased and nature-based products is the belief that we must build a future where raw materials are not depleted and we learn to think circularly. I feel a strong connection to nature and want to bring that connection back into how we make and use things. For me, natural materials are not only sustainable but also rich, full of character, and full of meaning. They contribute to products that are healthier, safer, and better for people and the environment. That's precisely why I see them as valuable, in every step of the process.
What would you advise designers and buyers to do or avoid?
Biobased materials have different, often less uniform properties. Don't see these as shortcomings, but rather as their strength and aesthetic value.
What is your response when clients say that biobased is expensive?
For me, the difference lies in price and value. It might be expensive, but it's not expensive, because what you get in return is real value: renewable resources, less environmental damage, and a stronger story for your customer.
Which project would you like to mention and why?
The Tube Lamp! A design at the intersection of technology and craftsmanship. Heavy, robust, and made of bio-based materials, yet meticulously handcrafted, it's a product that showcases the tension between industrial and handmade, demonstrating that bio-based designs can also be powerful, raw, and distinctive. This creates a challenge: in material, form, and meaning.
