#5 10 Nov. '25 Needs and opportunities for sustainable interior design - | DDW review

10 november 2025

Klokgebouw, Hall 3: The first SPRBio'S Collective at Dutch Design Week: conversations with designers, manufacturers, (interior) architects, press, and more.

The fact that SuperBio showcased currently available products for projects—rather than just material developments—led to responses like, "Exactly what we need," "That's great," and "Yes, we now have a department that focuses on that, but it's actually difficult to find purely biobased products and information."

Together with exhibitors Bioplasticshop, BCMaterials, Tom Schoonhoven Studio, Atelier Fig., UAK-Design, and Lennart Lauren, we showcased products made from a variety of biobased materials, including bioplastics (including those for 3D printing), (stamped) clay, and wood, crafted into furniture, partitions, lighting, wall and furniture construction, and surface finishes.

We're monitoring feedback from creators, agencies, producers, educational institutions, the press, and more, and connecting with them. We're also eager to hear your needs and feedback after the trade show.

PROJECT INSPIRATION

Construction of the new wing of the Design Museum Ghent
"We have consciously and rigorously focused on the use of circular and biobased materials," director Katrien Laporte told us at Dutch Design Week, when discussing the new wing of the Design Museum Ghent.

The new Design Museum Ghent is a completely climate-conscious expansion. It's completely barrier-free. You'll soon be able to enter for free and explore design.

Construction of the new wing officially began in May 2023 with the demolition of existing buildings. The event "Do the Right Thing" was linked to this event: https://www.designmuseumgent.be/do-the-right-ding .
For three weeks, the halls of the former railway site were used as a workshop where the Gent Waste Brick was pressed before the eyes of the people of Ghent. The sand-lime brick, composed of 63% Ghent waste streams, structural glass, and recycled concrete, is the result of close collaboration between numerous partners: the architects ATAMA and Carmody Groarke, the designated client sogent, the research team of Local Works Studio, BC materials as the manufacturer, and Design Museum Ghent.

The foundation stone was laid in January 2025, and the facade was fully completed in July 2025. The museum is scheduled to reopen with its new wing, which will include a museum café, a courtyard garden, a terrace, the new entrance, and the shop, on October 3, 2026.

In the meantime, SuperBio's will return with an update and more applied biobased products in the rooms.

Designers and artists, including Tom Schoonhoven, were also able to experiment with the same waste material in this workshop.
